A tale of two online news sites: ABC Online and the Courier Mail

From the outset, the Courier Mail website stamps itself as the more colourful and ostentatious of the two while ABC Online smacks of sophistication and refinement. Aside from mere aesthetics though, the fundamental question remains, how well do these two sites measure up in terms of functionality and user interactivity?

The functionality of a website encompasses site design and the ease in using it. ABC Online has a well organised layout and the use of moderate colour ensures the site is not dull or static. Headers break up the text into digestible portions and there are only a few photographs guiding the user to the main stories. This simplicity in design assists in the straightforward delivery of information with the web page easy to scan. There is good use of drop-down menus that act to conceal a large volume of information that may otherwise overwhelm the user and the site is easy to navigate. Continue reading
